Getting the Best from your Dishwasher

Many modern kitchens feature a dishwasher amongst their appliances. They’re an incredibly useful addition to any home, and our own integrated dishwasher is no exception. Suitable for washing 10 place settings, and with a 2 year parts and labour guarantee, it’s sure to save you plenty of time in the kitchen.

Dishwasher Loading 101

There are a number of things you can do to make sure you’re using yours effectively, and ensure you get the best from it during its life.

  1. Rinse any food or heavy sauces from the plate’s surface. Otherwise, the appliance will have to work much harder to clean them, resulting in a higher electricity bill.
  2. Always store cutlery with the business end down. By this, we mean putting knives in blade-first, forks in prongs-first, and so on. This will save you touching dirty cutlery or cutting yourself on exposed blades.
  3. Store cutlery efficiently, but avoid having things like spoons crammed in together. This ensures they will all be cleaned properly.
  4. Similarly, make sure that plates and bowls are not placed too close together. By leaving space between each one, you will ensure that the internal jets can reach every part of them.
  5. Don’t forget you can put some larger items in your dishwasher, like cooking pots! Make sure to rinse excess food off beforehand, and that items aren’t crammed in.

But wait! Not everything can go in a dishwasher.

While it’s possible to wash many items in one, there are some items we don’t suggest washing in it. Wooden items can warp if they are washed in your dishwasher, and other common kitchens like non-stick pans can be negatively affected by it. It’s also worth avoiding anything with hand-painted detail or gold trim, and anything with burnt-on stains. As a general rule, it’s best to hand wash something if it’s especially dirty, or you’re particularly attached to it.

Finally, for inspiration on loading your dishwasher, we suggest looking at this collection of instruction manuals. Assembled by a Joe Clark on Flickr*, it’s a brilliant resource that shows you how to best use the space.

With a dishwasher in your kitchen, cleaning crockery and cutlery has never been easier. And with this advice to hand, it’s never been easier to use it properly! Take a look at our own dishwasher by clicking here.
